Creative Mentoring

What is creative mentoring?

I’ve been talking a lot recently about creative mentoring and creative business mentoring here and on my social media, but I guess you might be wondering what creative mentoring is or what this means and what I actually do. Well, I work with stuck creatives and creative business owners at all stages of the creative journey. Together, we work to identify and move past blocks and obstacles that are getting in your way, troubleshoot things you’re struggling with, and come up with an action plan to help you move forward, so you can focus on the things you do like to do, rather than all the things you don’t.

I know there’s a hell of a lot of one-size-fits-all advice out of there but I also know most of us don’t have one-size-fits-all problems. And, honestly, often just talking to another human who’s been there and gets it is goes a hell of a long way to solving those problems.

When I first started out as a creative business owner, I just wanted someone to talk through ideas with, someone who would hold space for me and help me see what might work and what wouldn’t. Someone to guide me through the hard sticky bits, explain stuff I didn’t understand, and answer any silly questions I had – and I had a lot of questions and lost a lot of time and energy and money searching for the answers.

In the end, I figured it all out, but, even though things were running smoothly on the outside, there were a lot of knowledge gaps and holes. I’d spend half my time trying to sidestep them and find workarounds for things I didn’t know, instead of getting the things I wanted to get done.

Eventually, I hit a wall and realised working like this was super unsustainable. I ended up finding someone to help me retroactively audit my business (and my mind), fill in all the gaps, and help get me out of my own way so I could move forward. Not only did it help me immensely, but I also couldn’t believe that there were people out there offering these services. Working as a mentor in this capacity seemed way more aligned for me than literally everything I’d been doing up to that point (graphic design, photography, writing), but I had a lot of imposter syndrome.

In the end, though, after a few years of working with my own mentors both within my business and on developing my mindset and mentoring skills, I realised I was now in a place to be the person I wish I’d had by my side when I first started out.

However, that being said, I also know that a lot of people don’t really want to make their creativity “work” for them and turn it into a business. So, I also work with creatives who want some help on the creative journey or the inner one. I especially love working with people struggling with any icky, sticky stuff, or finding that life always gets in the way and struggling to find time, energy, and balance for their art and their craft.

Embracing my creativity has absolutely changed my life and now I love nothing more than being able to help other people navigate this rather strange and lonely but ultimately rewarding creative journey, too.
